Montessori Classroom Environment
The classroom at Bellingham Children's House offers age appropriate opportunities for exploration, socialization, creativity and development. It is a family style, non-competitive environment that strives to provide warm and caring interactions, along with consistency and individual attention for each child. Through close cooperation between parents and teachers, children are gradually able to separate from their parents without anxiety. Children learn from lessons provided by the teacher, observation, use of materials, and by interacting with other children. The atmosphere is one of respect and caring.
Everything in the environment is arranged with your child in mind. Learning materials are carefully chosen to be developmentally appropriate, multi-sensory, self-educating, and aesthetically pleasing. They are attractively located on low shelves for easy accessibility. The choices of materials help your child develop order, concentration, coordination, and independence; the keys to successful learning.
Freedom of movement is essential to physical and cognitive development. Although there is structure in the environment, the schedule of the day, and the ground rules, the children are free to move about, socialize and make choices about what they will do during the course of the morning.
